How Much Do You Need to Retire?

The biggest mistake in retirement planning is underestimating how much you need. There are two widely used frameworks:

The 25x Rule: Multiply your estimated annual retirement expenses by 25. If you need ₹8 lakh per year in retirement, your target corpus is ₹2 crore (25 × ₹8L). This assumes a 4% safe withdrawal rate — you can withdraw 4% of your corpus annually without running out of money over a 30-year retirement.

The 80% Rule: Target a retirement income equal to 80% of your pre-retirement income. Some expenses fall in retirement (commuting, work clothing, mortgage if paid off) while others rise (healthcare, travel).

Both rules require adjusting for inflation. If you estimate needing ₹80,000/month today but will retire in 20 years with 6% inflation, you will actually need approximately ₹2.57 lakh/month — a very different number.

The Retirement Savings Formula

In Retirement: Conservative — 30-40% equity for growth, 60-70% in debt instruments for stability and income. Maintain a 2-year cash buffer to avoid selling equity during market downturns.

For most private-sector employees, EPF alone is unlikely to be sufficient for a comfortable retirement, especially with increasing lifespans. The EPF corpus grows at the government-declared rate (typically 8-8.5%) and may not keep pace with inflation for 20-30 years of retirement.
