How the Calculation Works

Modern date difference calculations use the Julian Day Number or Unix timestamp systems to avoid manual calendar arithmetic.

The Unix timestamp counts milliseconds since January 1, 1970, 00:00:00 UTC. To find days between two dates:
1. Convert both dates to timestamps
2. Subtract: End timestamp − Start timestamp
3. Divide by milliseconds per day (1000 × 60 × 60 × 24 = 86,400,000)
4. Round to nearest integer

This method automatically accounts for varying month lengths (28/29/30/31 days) and leap years, making it perfectly accurate for any two dates without manual counting.

Gregorian calendar leap year rule:
- Divisible by 4 = leap year (2024, 2028...)
- Divisible by 100 = NOT a leap year (1900, 2100...)
- Divisible by 400 = leap year again (1600, 2000...)

This means 2100 will NOT be a leap year, despite being divisible by 4.

Working Days vs Calendar Days

Calendar days count every day including weekends and holidays. Working days (business days) exclude weekends and public holidays — a critical distinction for employment, legal and financial contexts.

Approximating working days:
Working Days ≈ Calendar Days × (5/7) − Public Holidays

For example, 30 calendar days ≈ 21-22 working days (minus holidays in that period).
